Boris Matrosov's "captivating simplicity" became, in the opinion of art critic Joseph Bakstein, "a stylistic sign of the most interesting and significant phenomena in the art of the 1990s". Matrosov is one of the key figures of the most daring and fun association of that time – the art group "World Champions", which consistently made fun of the deadly seriousness of the artistic strategies of the Moscow conceptualists of the older generation.

In 2005, for the Art Field festival, Matrosov came up with a large-scale text object "Happiness is not beyond the mountains", which was later installed on the Kama River in the city of Perm and became almost the official symbol of the city. In 2016, Matrosov placed an object on the roof of the Garage museum based on the text from his own painting of 2012 — "No, well, she couldn't have known what it was all about...".

Boris Matrosov draws "pictures of pictures" — what, according to common ideas, is "normal", as if all visible reality: interiors, landscapes, using a minimum of funds. It is important for the author that the picture is drawn for a person, not for a printing press, not for a magazine, not for the Internet.

Matrosov's artworks are in the collection of the State Tretyakov Gallery, the collections of Pierre-Christian Brochet, Paquita Escofe-Miro, Igor Markin, Sergei Borisov.
